Is Moissanite Real? 10 Questions Answered

Moissanite is one of the most searched gemstones in India right now, and also one of the most misunderstood. Here are straight answers to the ten questions our customers ask most often in our Lucknow stores and on WhatsApp.

1. Is moissanite a real gemstone?

Yes. Moissanite is a real gemstone made of silicon carbide. It was first discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in a meteorite crater in Arizona. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so the moissanite used in jewellery today is grown in labs, which keeps quality consistent.

2. Is moissanite a diamond?

No. A diamond is pure carbon; moissanite is silicon carbide. They look very similar, but they are different stones, and a trustworthy jeweller will always label moissanite as moissanite. If you want a real diamond that is grown in a lab, that is a lab grown diamond, which is a different product.

3. Does moissanite pass a diamond tester?

Moissanite passes most standard thermal diamond testers, because it conducts heat like a diamond. Newer multi-testers also check electrical conductivity and can tell them apart. Our moissanite is certified (GRA or INGEMCO) and clearly labelled, so you always know exactly what you own.

4. Does moissanite look fake?

Good quality moissanite (D to F colour, VVS clarity or better) looks bright, clean and expensive. It actually shows more rainbow "fire" than a diamond, especially in stones over 1 carat. What makes jewellery look cheap is usually poor metal work or low grade stones, not moissanite itself.

5. Will moissanite get cloudy or change colour?

No. Moissanite does not cloud, fade or change colour over time. It can collect oil and dust like any gemstone, so it may look dull until it is cleaned. A soft brush with mild soap and warm water brings the sparkle straight back.

6. How strong is moissanite?

Moissanite rates 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond (10) among jewellery stones. That makes it ideal for engagement rings and everyday pieces you never take off.

7. What do the grades mean?

  • Colour: D, E and F are colourless. These are the grades we use for white moissanite.
  • Clarity: FL (flawless) and VVS mean no inclusions visible even under magnification.
  • Certificate: GRA or INGEMCO reports confirm the stone and its grades. Portuguese cut stones are certified by INGEMCO, as GRA does not issue reports for that cut.

8. Is moissanite worth it?

For most people, yes. You get a large, brilliant, durable stone for a fraction of the price of a diamond. At Woke Collection moissanite also carries a 50% buyback. If an heirloom diamond matters more to you than size, choose lab grown diamond instead (80% buyback). Read our full moissanite vs lab grown diamond guide.

9. Does moissanite come in colours?

Yes. Besides colourless, moissanite is grown in blue, green, pink, yellow and more. Our Portuguese cut pieces in blue-green and pink, and our coloured moissanite collection, are customer favourites.

10. Silver or gold for moissanite?

Both work. 925 sterling silver keeps the price low and is perfect for everyday and fashion pieces. 9K, 14K or 18K gold is better for engagement rings and heirlooms. Not sure? See our gold karat and pricing explainer.
